Custom Group classes:

block printed canvas bags

At ADX, we’ve found that working with our hands and using practical design skills is a great way to get out of a rut and boost creativity.

Working together at ADX can help your team build hard and soft skills while fighting burnout. Our instructors craft engaging design challenges that develop your groups’ skills and bring them together as a team. Participants naturally develop leadership skills in guided collaborative projects designed specifically for your group.

ADX offers numerous learning opportunities that focus on experiential learning and collaboration as a way to engage you, your friends, colleagues, neighbors and employees. Choose from our standard class offerings or customize your experience.

This group used a combination of screen printing and hand carved blocks to print their own designs onto tote bags.

We will have an instructor lead your group through the project, start to finish. They will teach you how to use any tools needed and be there to trouble shoot problems.

Projects can be completed in one day or a series of days for a larger project. The project can have more room for creativity, like block printing, or more structured, like an Edison bulb lamp. We will take care of the set up, materials and clean up!

If your team or group could benefit from this type of hands on experience please contact info@adxportland.com. We offer different projects that will suit the needs of your group. Check out our website to see which Group Class will work for you!

Shop Life

Dave Richland

ADX has recently taken on a new member who is so excited to be part of the ADX community! He cares about access to $100k worth of tools, access to our community kitchen, clean restrooms, an extensive array of free scraps to choose from as well as a supportive community interested in him as a maker and an artist. Dave explains daily how happy he is to have access to safe space to work on his craft, this is incredibly special to him because he is also a houseless artist. He is incredibly talented and inspiring. He works every morning at ADX to make his beautiful cans and in the afternoons heads out to sell his creations. We recently got an email from a friend who came across Dave selling his cans the other day, this is what she wrote:

“I was at New Seasons last weekend and stopped dead in my tracks at an artist selling incredible artwork, the neon geometric shapes on tuna cans, etc. I DIED. I bought three (one here pictured in my office) and quickly learned this is David, the artist at your space, who spoke so movingly about your help and generosity. He is extraordinarily talented. I’m hoping to work with him on another project.  You are right. Something magical is going on here (not that I doubted! But how fortunate I was to see it with my own eyes)”

This story is what we live for here at ADX. Supporting those who otherwise may not have access to spaces and tools to facilitate the creation of art, goods and meaningful connections! This story is one of many examples of why ADX is great, and that is because it is made up of great members!

Acid etching basics

August 29, 6-9pm

Acid etching has been done for centuries to adorn non-ferrous metals with designs and images. Don’t be intimidated, this is a very accessible process for beginners and experts alike! In this class students are provided 6″x4″ of 16 gauge copper or brass sheet which can be used to make many different pieces of jewelry: a pendant necklace, a cuff bracelet, earrings, charms, name plates, and more! The pieces will be cut by hand, holes drilled, and shaped using hammers and files. Ferric chloride is then used to chemically etch the surface with an image of your choosing, either hand drawn or applied via a toner and iron transfer.

Coptic stitched block printed sketchbooks

September 3, 6-9pm

Learn how to construct a Coptic Stitch sketchbook with a block printed cover completely by hand! This binding style makes excellent sketchbooks and journals because of the way that they lay flat when you open them, so your book won’t close on you when you try to write or draw. In this class, you will be introduced to a variety of binding styles, the tools needed for bookbinding, linoleum block printing, and receive a step by step tutorial on a beautiful Coptic bound book of your very own! Every aspect of the process can be completely customized depending on what the book is being used for, making bookbinding an incredibly personal experience. The shape of the book, the texture of the paper, the color of the thread, can all communicate something different, which makes flipping through a new book almost as exciting as getting to know a new person!
