Table saw basics

april 11th, 6-10pm

Join us for an evening and learn how to make the most of our SawStop Table Saw, including miter cuts and how to install and use a dado stack. Students will start by cutting material to dimension, move to hollowing out a box with the dado stack, cut tenons and miters for the box top, and complete a basic assembly using wood glue and clamps.

wooden books

april 16th, 6-9pm

 

Make a book out of wood in a way you never thought possible. In this 4 hour class you will choose your selection of wood for pages and covers and turn it into a small book that can be used for a variety of things! This sturdy book can be used like any other, as a sketchbook or journal, but is also ideal for a photo album, collage, or painting. Or use a wood burning tool or laser engraver to really make use of the solid wood pages! This class opens doors to people who want to work across mediums, perfect for bookbinders and woodworkers who want to break away from the traditional projects.

jewelry soldering basics

april 17th, 6-9pm

Improve your soldering skills in this course which covers in detail the use of the jewelry acetylene torch. In this class you will learn the basics of soldering soft metals, completing samples of the most commonly used types of joints. More complex and intricate joints can be introduced, students who already have taken the Intro to Jewelry and Metalsmithing class but wish to expand their skill set will want to jump in here!

Join us Friday, April 6th, from 6-9pm for the opening of Behind the Process: Digital to Physical Art Exhibition. Come check out this revolving exhibition of digital art created by local designers, artists and you!

ADX, in partnership with Wacom Technology and AIGA, is excited to host this exhibit focusing on the creative process: from Digital to Physical. Each of our featured artists will talk about their process, and walk our audience through a live demo focusing on their discipline. With our forces combined, we can create anything! Come to learn more about the process of creating things digitally and applying those skills to a physical product.

japanese woodcut watercolor prints

Japanese woodcut techniques date back to the 8th century when printing methods were shared by Chinese Buddhist temples. The traditional tools and techniques have not changed since then and are now taught worldwide. You’ll leave class with a block you carved, prints you printed, and the knowledge you need to practice at home.

Stained glass panel series

Learn basic stained glass techniques and walk away with a small glass art piece, ready to hang, in this two-session series. This class will cover all the basic steps needed to make a small stained glass hanging using a combination of copper foil and leaded glass techniques.

Humans have been making jewelry for thousands of years. Now, it’s your turn! Embark on our Stone Setting Path and you’ll learn all the skills necessary to make beautiful, stone set rings and more.

lathe tool basics

Woodturning is not only an incredibly satisfying process, it’s a ton of fun! This skill-based class gives you hands-on time on the lathe under the direct supervision of an experienced wood turner. The different types of knives, gouges, and chisels are demonstrated and practiced, also learning how to sharpen and keep sharp using safe, proper cutting techniques.

If you work in the manufacturing or maker world then you won’t want to miss this upcoming conference sponsored by Prosper Portland and the Central Eastside Industrial Council (CEIC). The conference will consist of two events:

1). Presentations by guest speakers from School House Electric, Autodesk and OMEP around lean/efficiency improvement, innovation, and business development.
2). A series of 20-minute roundtable discussions where you will meet seven other manufacturers and makers, tell your story and discuss production, innovation, business intelligence and more before moving onto another table.

Choose a matte or high polished finish and walk away wearing or gifting your piece. This classic single-stone style builds on the basic skills introduced in Intro to Jewelry and Metalsmithing while applying the processes to a fun project.

ADX Portland and Form are pleased to announce Lisa Radon, visual artist, writer and performance artist as the recipient of the 2018 FORM+ADX Artist-in-Residence (AiR.) Radon will receive resources, technology, and materials to explore new ideas, processes, and perspectives. This includes a 3-month workspace at Form with access to 3D digital process and printing, a 3-month ADX membership to work with various materials and equipment, and 1-month solo exhibition at ANX Gallery, which is housed at ADX.

FORM+ADX AiR was established through a partnership between Form and ADX. Form was founded on the idea that the newest advances in 3D technology could energize and elevate artists in new and exciting directions. ADX is a hub for collaboration where individuals and organizations make and learn. By sharing tools, knowledge, and experience, ADX believes in doing things better by working together. As such, this program is a first of its kind.

Lisa Radon has made exhibitions at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Pied-à-terre San Francisco; Ditch Projects, Springfield, OR; Artspeak, Vancouver, B.C; and was included in Six Weeks at the Henry Art Gallery, Seattle. Her books include The Blind Remembrance of the Swirling Bone, Infinity Increaser, The Plumb and The Wave, and Prototyping Eutopias. In 2016, she was in a two-woman exhibition at RONGWRONG, Amsterdam, and created a solo exhibition at Jupiter Woods, London. In 2017, Radon launched Atrium of the Sun, The World Wide Web/Disjecta and will present How Like Water for Panel/LA in Los Angeles, CA this coming year. Radon publishes the journal EIGHTS.
