Wood Shop

Intro to Wood Shop

Interested in making something out of wood? This 4-hour class will give you the fundamental skills and build the confidence needed to safely create two identical and square pieces of wood. Not only will this make you a better woodworker, you'll be able to turn unsurfaced lumber into usable boards with ease. You'll also learn how to properly care for tools and clean up after use.

Router Table Basics

This 4-hour class will outline the most basic functions to get you familiar and comfortable with this most versatile of powertools. Essentially a big electric motor fitted with a collet that holds a cutting head (bit), a router runs uni-directionally and (often) at variable speed. Learn how to safely use the machine and tools, properly set up the table, exchange bits, gain lots of hands-on experience and build a sweet box.

An entire 4-hour class dedicated to our SawStop; students learn how to make the most of this versatile tool while building a simple trinket box.

CNC Router Basics

Learn how to cut or engrave on our Pro Series 60"x120" CNC Router. This class will teach students how to set up, safely use, and troubleshoot common problems with the Wood Shop CNC. Members must attend this workshop before renting time to use the CNC.

Kitchen Knife Series

Join us for a 2-day workshop building a handle, assembling a knife and sharpening the 6” Damascus Steel blade for use in the kitchen.  Work with a selection of exotic hardwoods to shape a custom handle, learn how to properly apply epoxy to attach scales to the tang, drill pin holes, buffer the wood, and finally, polish the blade throughout with sandpaper and sharpen for use.

Wood and Metal Table Fabrication Series

This 4-session series is the full package! Start in the Wood Shop by collecting, arranging, cutting, and gluing up exotic wood scraps for a unique tabletop; plane the completed boards, and add finishing oil or poly topcoat.  While in the metal shop, prepare and cut metal for a stand, weld, grind new welds and rough edges, and paint if desired. Finally, assemble the tabletop to the stand for a totally unique piece of furniture, all under the tutelage of a very talented ADX Maker.

Wooden Books

Make a book out of wood in a way you never thought possible. In this 3 hour class you will choose your selection of wood for pages and covers and turn it into a small book that can be used for a variety of things! This sturdy book can be used like any other, as a sketchbook or journal, but is also ideal for a photo album, collage, or painting. Or use a wood burning tool or laser engraver to really make use of the solid wood pages! This class opens doors to people who want to work across mediums, perfect for bookbinders and woodworkers who want to break away from the traditional projects.

Kumiko Speaker

Traditional Japanese woodworking is famous for it's precise joinery that requires no hardware or glue to maintain strength. This technique is also used to create intricate, wooden, functional artwork, known as kumiko, which is used within Japanese style-rooms to create a stunning atmosphere. In this four-hour class you will make and take home a small powered speaker to liven up your cooking, working or playing! The class is an introduction to the kumiko woodworking technique as well as very (very!) simple electronics. Along with the speaker, you will leave with an understanding of the physics of a loud speaker and an fairly intimate relationship with basswood.

Hope Chests Series

Build and customize your own full-size hope chest in this 4 session series. This is a traditional woodworking project that utilizes many of the tools and processes frequently done in a wood shop, teaching you how to square up material, prepare for assembly, and protect for longtime use. This class is great for beginners and intermediate students who want to build on their woodworking skills while making a beautiful keepsake that can be used for many years to come.

Lathe Tool Basics

Gain your confidence with this powerful and traditional tool by taking this 3 hour class that covers all the basics. Wood turning is a fun and satisfying process to make many different projects from table legs to bowls to knitting needles in a very short time. This skill-based class gives you hands-on time on the lathe under the direct supervision of an experienced wood turner. The different types of knives, gouges, and chisels are demonstrated and practiced, also learning how to sharpen and keep sharp using safe, proper cutting techniques.

Intro to Metal Shop

Interested in making something out of metal? This 4-hour class seeks to provide you with the fundamental skills and confidence necessary to safely operate within the ADX metal shop, including how to safely clean, cut, drill, grind, form and weld mild steel.

MIG Welding Basics

Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding is a great way to join mild steel quickly. MIG is extremely versatile and the easiest type of welding to learn. With practice, you will be able to make strong welds on steel and aluminum. This 4-hour class will teach you the fundamental skills and build the confidence needed to get started with serious welding. You'll learn how to properly set up the machine, setup your work piece, and the properties of a good weld.

TIG Welding Basics

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding produces the cleanest welds, provides the welder the greatest amount of control, but takes the most practice to master. This 4-hour class will give you the fundamental skills and build the confidence needed to take your welding to the next level. You'll learn how to properly set up the machine, clean and maintain your tools, and the properties of a good weld. Special attention will be given to the safety of the welder and those working around them.

Plasma CNC Basics

Cut steel and aluminum on our PRO Series Plasma CNC! This class will teach students how to set up, safely use, and troubleshoot common problems with the Metal Shop CNC. Learn how to format, upload and print your files, as well as how to set up a CNC and make sure it runs smoothly and safely. Basic design and file setup is covered, though this class focuses on how to operate the Plasma CNC machine. Consider scheduling One-on-One Instruction to learn about how to design files.

Intro to Screen Printing

The beauty of screen printing is that if it is flat, you can print on it, including wood, metal, fabric, plastic and paper. It is a versatile medium used to quickly and cheaply make multiples of your artwork. This 4-hour class walks students through the creation of a two-color print from start to finish, including how to coat, expose, wash, and reclaim screens, printing posters, and maintaining a clean working environment.

T-Shirt Basics: Screenprinting

Learn how to print your own small production run of T-shirts using ADX's 4-color press! Building on the basics covered in Intro to Screenprinting, this course will cover the production process behind printing a multi-color design onto shirts, napkins, and most any small-to-medium sized fabrics.​​​​​​​

Japanese Woodcut Watercolor Prints

Japanese woodcut techniques date back to the 8th century when printing methods were shared by Chinese Buddhist temples. The traditional tools and techniques have not changed since then and are now taught worldwide. Quick to learn but difficult to master, Japanese Woodcut Printmaking is a safe and economical way to make unique handmade works of art. You’ll leave class with a block you carved, prints you printed, and the knowledge you need to practice at home. This relief printing technique is done entirely by hand and with minimal tools; this makes it possible to complete prints from start to finish nearly anywhere!

Pattern Printing Series

In this 2-class series you'll learn how to create a repeating pattern using a variety of media, and how to print that pattern onto a flat surface, designing your own textiles or wallpaper! Patterns on fabric can be used for garments, upholstery, tapestries, curtains, and much more, leading to many potential projects that utilize the various shops at ADX. This challenging but fun buddy-printing technique builds on the principles learned in Intro to Screenprinting, so sign up with a friend and get inspired together! You'll leave class with a section of patterned fabric that you helped print!

Coptic Stitched Block Printed Sketchbooks

Learn how to construct a Coptic Stitch sketchbook with a block printed cover completely by hand! This binding style makes excellent sketchbooks and journals because of the way that they lay flat when you open them, so your book won’t close on you when you try to write or draw. In this class, you will be introduced to a variety of binding styles, the tools needed for bookbinding, linoleum block printing, and receive a step by step tutorial on a beautiful Coptic bound book of your very own! Every aspect of the process can be completely customized depending on what the book is being used for, making bookbinding an incredibly personal experience. The shape of the book, the texture of the paper, the color of the thread, can all communicate something different, which makes flipping through a new book almost as exciting as getting to know a new person!

Laser Cutter Basics

Learn how to cut or engrave your own designs with our Epilog Helix Laser Engraver. This class will teach students how to set up, safely use, and troubleshoot common problems with a laser printer. Learn how to format, upload and print your files, as well as how to set up a laser printer and make sure it runs smoothly and safely. NOTE: This class does not cover 2D design concepts. Look for our Vector Drawing classes and Laser Labs for assistance preparing 2D design files for the laser.

Set yourself up for further metalsmithing success in this 2 session series as you learn how to bezel set stones after making a ring or pendant. Choose a matte or high polished finish and walk away wearing or gifting your piece. This classic single-stone style builds on the basic skills introduced in Intro to Jewelry and Metalsmithing while applying the processes to a fun project.

Riveted Bangle Bracelets

Saw and hammer out the bangle bracelets of your liking while learning how to rivet metal to metal or organic materials together. Riveting is a classic, durable and popular way to create cold connections in jewelry designs (a "cold connection" is the joining together of metal components without using solder). This 3 hour course is a fun project-based class that is a great starting point for beginner metalsmiths.

New Member Orientation focuses on critical tool safety information and how to be a good member at ADX and get the most out of your membership. Learn the unique tips and tricks for each machine before using them to avoid being that person who breaks things. Hail Safety!

This orientation is included in your ADX Membership purchase and is limited to 4 students. Your membership will become active and subsequently renew on the day you take your New Member Orientation. Sign up ASAP to reserve your space!
