ADX Policies

September 28, 2018

Hello ADX Community,

I hope you are all enjoying this wonderful transition to fall and are finding plenty of time to work in the shop. We have a few reminders and shop policy changes that I would like to bring to your attention so we can all work safely and effectively during our time in the shop.

The staff and I are always trying to make ADX the safest work space and best community environment it can be. We want you to know that we take your comments and concerns very seriously. I am so grateful to be surrounded by such a great group of makers here at ADX, and it is the amazing place it is today because of our members, students and staff. Thank you!

In the vein of constant improvement, we are revamping some of our policies to better serve our growing community of thinkers and makers. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions, concerns or ideas for making our community better.

Loading Bay

Due to the overwhelming and growing demand for use of our loading bay, and our strong desire to give as many of you access as possible, we need to start regulating its use by large projects (like cars, vans and large builds).  Every Member will have 40 hours a month of free use of the loading bay. We’ll keep track of your use at the front desk, so be sure to check in when you arrive. Beyond 40 hours, the loading bay can be rented at $10 an hour. In addition, to ensure that the bay is available to all our members, we will be offering the option to book the loading bay space ahead of your arrival using our new Loading Bay Calendar available through the good folks at the front desk. Just give us a call, or stop by to book your time. And the bay will remain up for grabs when it’s not in use or booked.

Shop Dogs

We love our shop dogs!  We want to continue to allow them all into ADX, and to do our best to make sure they’re sharing the space in a courteous way just like our human members.  Before bringing your four legged friends to ADX, please be sure they’re trained, quiet, good with strange humans and other dogs, potty trained, and calm. And if your dog does not come when called, it must be on a leash and with you at all times. Please ensure that your dog is in your care at all times while in the shop. We all love dogs, but we’ve got work to do!  Poorly behaved dogs will be asked to leave.

Clean up

Please be sure to clean up after yourself when you are done working in the shop!  ADX staff and working members are here to ensure that the shop is running safely and smoothly, and to help members troubleshoot their projects, not to clean up after you. When you’re done working for the day, please make sure to clean up your work space and any common areas you have used. A clean shop is a safe shop. Thanks for your help!

Finishing and toxic chemical use

Have you seen the new and improved collapsible spray booth in the shop? We want to ensure healthy air quality for everyone working inside ADX. We understand that a large part of making projects is in the finishing. so you are welcome to sand your projects inside the wood shop and apply finishes and paint inside the spray booth. Sanding, applying polyurethanes, lacquers, spray finishes, applying epoxy or anything that creates fumes of any kind is not permitted on the factory floor. The spray booth is first come first serve with a waiting list that will be posted outside the spray booth. When in use be sure to post a red tag with your name and phone number on the outside so we can reach you.

Thank you for your help in keeping our shop safe, clean and accessible to all! If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly.

See you around the shop!
