Acid etching has been done for centuries to adorn non-ferrous metals with designs and images. Don’t be intimidated, this is a very accessible process for beginners and experts alike! In this class students are provided 6″x4″ of 16 gauge copper or brass sheet which can be used to make many different pieces of jewelry: a pendant necklace, a cuff bracelet, earrings, charms, name plates, and more! The pieces will be cut by hand, holes drilled, and shaped using hammers and files. Ferric chloride is then used to chemically etch the surface with an image of your choosing, either hand drawn or applied via a toner and iron transfer.
Students will learn to draw and transfer images onto sheet metals, then permanently etch the image into the surface. This is a skill-based class that introduces the technique and safety precautions but can be applied in many ways to jewelry or printmaking methods, or can be used on standard hardware to make it uniquely yours!
Students will be introduced to the chemical etching process of ferric chloride on non-ferrous metals. All materials will be provided, including copper sheet, brass sheet, jeweler’s saw blades, sandpaper, marking tools, and ferric chloride acid. Please notify ADX of any metal allergies before registering.
