Intro to Jewelry & Metalsmithing will help you get to know the tools at ADX and begin to build the skills necessary to make everything from cool jewelry to a set of silverware from nonferrous metal! Learn how to layout patterns on metal, saw, texture, form, and solder. This class will prepare you to work in the Jewelry Shop and get you ready for future ADX Jewelry & Metalsmithing classes, including Soldering Basics, Cold Joining Basics, and Stacker Ring Basics.
Students will be able to identify and confidently use the jewelry and metalsmithing tools inside the Jewelry Shop, develop fine hand skills necessary for jewelry fabrication, and work on a small keychain or pendant.
All materials will be provided, including copper sheet, brass sheet, jeweler’s saw blades, and sandpaper. Please notify ADX of any metal allergies before registering. Students will be introduced to and practice using a Jeweler’s saw frame, bench pin, variable speed drill press, ring clamp, needle files, acetylene/air torch, pickle pot, and forming hammers.
Lindsey is a contemporary jeweler metalsmith born and raised in the Midwest. She received an MFA in Metals from the University of Illinois where she developed a keen eye for detail and a love for teaching. Although traditionally trained, she is always looking for new techniques and a chance to share with other makers. Her one-of-a-kind studio work has been exhibited nationally and she continues her work as a writer and maker from her studio in Portland and at ADX.
The non-member price includes 1 month of Jewelry Shop Membership ($125 value!) so you can practice what you learned and get started on your next project!
***New members must still attend our New Member Orientation within a month of the class start date before you can work in the shops.
