Kitchen Knife Series
Join us for a 3-week series building a handle, assembling a knife and sharpening the 5” blade for use in the kitchen or while camping. Work with a selection of exotic hardwoods to shape a custom handle, learn how to properly apply epoxy to attach scales to the tang, drill pin holes, buffer the wood, and finally, polish the blade throughout with sandpaper and sharpen the blade using a wet stone. Ben will facilitate the first two classes while students focus on building their custom handle; Hunter will work with everyone during the final class to sharpen each blade like a professional. Previous experience or knowledge of woodworking is not required, but expect to leave with some!

Ben Shafer Rickles graduated from Vermont Woodworking School, and has been teaching and building furniture since. His designs unionize complex joinery and functionality and purpose. In the woodshop and beyond he often produces a contagious smile, and is referred to by his friends as an energizer bunny. He takes every opportunity to explore anything that’s new.
Hunter Lea is a 3rd generation craftsman and joined Portland Razor Company in 2014 in pursuit of his lifelong fascination with all things sharp. When he isn’t grinding straight razors, Hunter can usually be found designing knives, making coffee, lifting something heavy, or (attempting) to climb something scary-tall.
Previous experience or knowledge of woodworking or sharpening blades is not required, but expect to leave with some!
